2025 Form 1040, Line 9
Total Income: Line 9, the §61 Bucket
2025 Form 1040, Line 9 — total income: Lines 1 through 8 summed. Every §61 inclusion — wages, interest, dividends, retirement, Social Security, capital gains, Schedule 1 extras — before a single adjustment. The before picture — see Guide Ch. 2.
What feeds it
Line 1 wages, 2b interest, 3b dividends, 4b IRA distributions, 5b pensions, 6b taxable Social Security, 7 capital gains, 8 Schedule 1 additional income. Eight lines in, one number out — the grand total of everything the Code counts.
Why it is not the number you are taxed on
Two subtractions stand between Line 9 and tax: §62 adjustments down to AGI (Line 11), then §63 deductions down to taxable income (Line 15). Each subtraction is its own planning surface — which is why the chain matters more than any single line.
Questions, answered
- Total income vs. AGI — what's the difference?
- Line 9 adds everything includable under §61. AGI (Line 11) subtracts the above-the-line adjustments — student loan interest, IRA, HSA, half of SE tax. Total income is the before picture.
- Can Line 9 be negative?
- Yes — net business or capital losses can drag it below zero. The form allows it; downstream lines floor where they need to.
- What's the biggest thing people leave out?
- Schedule 1 extras on Line 8: side-gig profit, taxable refunds, gig-platform payouts. The W-2 lines get all the attention; Line 8 is where underreporting lives.
